Do you have a “bendy body” … Being able to stretch deeper & longer than others, perhaps your finger joints do weird things. Do you have hyperextended knees or elbows. Do you gravitate towards yoga to attempt to experience deeper stretching?
Hyper-mobility is when our joints move beyond “normal” range of movement, whatever “normal” means.
A good synopsis comes from an article in Rheumatology International
“Hyper-mobility is not a diagnosis, but a descriptor used to define a joint that exceeds as normal range of motion, considering age, sex and race. This feature is predominantly determined by the tightness or laxity of ligaments, which in turn is influenced by genetics, involving the connective tissue genes, collagen, elastin and fibrin”.
You can assess for yourself if you may have hyper-mobility, as it is measured by a scale called the Beighton Score
If you are hyper-mobile, you can’t improve joint laxity unfortunately, although you can do things to help.
Functional Strength Training is useful in helping people with hyper-mobility, it is not the cure but increasing the strength of the tissues around the joints, helps with the symptoms.
Massage is also good for the aches and pains associated with hyper-mobility...
